How to Choose your Disc Jockey.
Choosing your entertainment is a very important step in planning any event, and it requires some effort to get it right. The way that your entertainer interacts with and performs for your guests will determine just how long the celebration lasts. Although there are many different forms of entertainment, BME suggests choosing a DJ, because the DJ normally has the most versatility to be able to adjust music selections during the course of the event, if necessary. In this segment, we break down, step by step, some factors that are important when hiring a DJ that will please you.
- Know
your situation- this means
understanding the demographics of your guests. Understand what genres of
music they like, and decide whether the entertainment will take the
forefront (i.e. people will want to dance) or whether the DJ is background
(i.e. people will get more enjoyment from just listening). Communicate
this knowledge to your potential DJ so that he/she will not be surprised.
- Think
about the level of participation- many people tell horror stories of disc jockeys that were
overbearing, emcee’d like a game show host and/or portrayed a certain
“cheesiness” that made their guests uncomfortable (making guests wear
silly hats or singling out guests to dance before they are ready). After
you have spent some time considering your guests, you can make a decision
about whether or not the DJ should present the “cheese”. If your event
requires a microphone presence, make sure that your DJ is comfortable and
skilled at public speaking. Understand that there is a difference between
being able to emcee well and being overbearing. Don’t settle for less than
what you want.

what you want- Before you
make a choice, take some time to determine what you would consider to be a
successful event (did people dance all night, did they sing along, did
they STAY, etc.). Make a list of criteria for your DJ. Then
determine if the DJ has the right qualities to contribute to the success
of the event.

the overall importance- Pricing
is always important when choosing a DJ. Undoubtedly, you can find a wide
range of prices. If you consider the DJ to be a crucial element in the
overall success of the evening, don’t be afraid to pay a little more money
for someone that has the qualifications and references. But don’t assume
that you have to pay an arm and a leg to get good service. Either way, try
not to put yourself in a situation where the photographer (to whom you
paid a lot of money) didn’t get good shots because no one enjoyed the DJ.
- Don’t procrastinate- Once you find a choice that fits your criteria, BOOK NOW! Don’t wait around, hoping that a better option will come along. Planning early gives you plenty of time to plan with your specific DJ, and avoids the pains of having your top choice be unavailable because you waited too long!!!
